UMd. Student Breaks Hunger Strike After 50 Hours

After 50 hours, University of Maryland student Aaron Kraus believes he's met his goal: bringing public attention to the issue of the state's college tuition hikes.

The 21-year-old senior publicly broke his 50-hour hunger strike at the state capital when he bit into a roast beef hoagie at noon.

"I thought this would be a perfect metaphor for higher education in Maryland," Kraus said of his hunger strike in an earlier interview. "We're trying to get legislators thinking about how this impacts our generation."

Kraus, recently elected president of the University of Maryland Student Government Association, said 40 lawmakers approached him during his quiet protest just outside the State House and the governor's mansion.

He distributed copies of a letter from House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Mike Miller that said the two leaders shared concern for dwindling support of the state's public universities and colleges.

Kraus' goal is to persuade lawmakers to overturn Governor Ehrlich's veto of a bill that would have capped tuition hikes at state universities.

The hunger strike was the most recent of a number of more theatrical tuition protests mounted by Maryland students. In March 2003, students and the university's terrapin mascot staged a funeral for higher education in front of the State House. A short time later, a former student government vice president dubbed himself "Bahama Bob" to protest Ehrlich's vacations. That spring former student government president Tim Daly stood atop a 1980 Ford Pinto to draw attention to a comment by the governor that implied that the state could afford only a low-budget level of social services. Later that summer Daly and students staged a game show called "Wheel of Misfortune," where students answered questions about layoffs and tuition hikes.
