Don't brush too long, too hard
June 20, 2003

London: Brushing too long and too hard is bad for your teeth, a team of British university researchers says.

Poor technique, applying excessive force and brushing for too long can lead to gum disease and tooth decay as the enamel is brushed off.

According to Peter Heasman, a professor of periodontology at Newcastle University's School of Dental Sciences, two minutes twice a day brushing with a pressure of 150 grams - equivalent to holding an orange - is correct practice.

"You don't have to scrub and you don't have to work away with Olympian force," he said after a volunteer-based study.

"People who brush their teeth for longer and harder than is necessary may not be making them any cleaner, and could be causing permanent damage."

"If you are unsure, the best thing to do is to make an appointment with your dentist or dental hygienist who will be able to train you in the correct techniques and show you in practice approximately how much pressure," Heasman said.

He offered five tips for good teeth: get the shape of your brush right, and change it when it shows wear, check your technique with the dentist, do not scrub but rather brush, floss or use interdental brushes and brush for two minutes with
15 grams of pressure at least once a day. - Sapa-DPA
