Heavy security for the Travoltas By William Keck, USA TODAY BEVERLY HILLS — John Travolta and his wife, Kelly Preston, are being heavily guarded by security after receiving undisclosed threats. The couple was surrounded by beefy guards as Travolta was honored Sunday and Monday nights by the Hollywood Film Festival.
Travolta's publicist, Paul Bloch, said Tuesday, "I think the best thing to say is 'no comment.' "
A month ago at the Ladder 49 premiere, Travolta was accompanied only by his one regular bodyguard as he crossed Hollywood Boulevard to sign autographs.
But at Sunday night's premiere for his new film, A Love Song for Bobby Long, Travolta and Preston arrived very late as two bomb-sniffing dogs checked guests. Also unusual: Guests were required to remove all pens from their pockets, and, at the Hollywood Athletic Club after-party, men's wallets were searched.
Monday night found Travolta entering the Beverly Hilton ballroom from backstage to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8th Annual Hollywood Awards, which also attracted honorees Mel Gibson, Leonardo DiCaprio,Annette Bening, Jamie Foxx and Keira Knightley.
Knightley had her hair cut and colored into a bob for her role as a sexy bounty hunter in Domino.
"It was so therapeutic," she said of her cut.
Emerging from a backstage bathroom where they were escorted and guarded, Travolta and Preston did not talk about the threats. But they joked about the gray hair he sports as an alcoholic in Bobby Long.
"It was very distinguished and handsome," raved Preston, who said she would encourage Travolta to go gray — when the time comes.
