Two U.S. Soldiers Die in Afghan Fighting

Saturday April 26, 2003 9:10 AM

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (AP) - A second American soldier died early Saturday from wounds suffered the day before in a battle with Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan.

The two Americans, whose names were not released, died in a firefight with at least 20 suspected Taliban fighters in Shkin, according to a statement released from Bagram Air Base, the headquarters of U.S. operations in Afghanistan.

Four other U.S. special forces soldiers injured in the fighting were in stable condition at a hospital at the base, just north of the capital, Kabul, the military said.

The soldiers were investigating a group of men armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers and AK-47 assault rifles in an area where rockets were fired at a U.S. outpost on Wednesday.

``They went out there and made contact with the enemy. It was a direct firefight,'' said Col. Roger King, a spokesman for the U.S. military.

He said a second group of 35 U.S. soldiers was called in, and two F-16 fighter jets, an A-10 fighter aircraft and helicopter gunships scrambled to the area, but were unable to locate any targets.

At least three enemy fighters were killed, while the remainder escaped across the border into Pakistan, the U.S. military said.

The area in eastern Afghanistan has been one of the most active in the country, with frequent rocket attacks on U.S. bases. Taliban remnants are believed to have linked forces with al-Qaida fugitives and followers of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a former prime minister who has gone underground and vowed to undermine the government of President Hamid Karzai.
