Suspected Taliban Killed in Afghanistan, U.S. Military Says

June 9 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Marines clashed with suspected Taliban fighters in central Afghanistan as part of a search for gunmen operating in the region, the U.S. military command said.

U.S. and Afghan forces killed an unknown number of gunmen in yesterday's fighting in ``the Taliban heartland,'' the command said in a statement in the capital, Kabul. It didn't say where the operation took place.

Coalition soldiers are fighting a force of between 500 and 800 Taliban operating from the eastern province of Zabul, Agence France-Presse reported, citing Abdullah Laghmanai, intelligence chief for Kandahar region, as saying yesterday.

Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters will step up attacks as Afghanistan prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections in September, the U.S. military command has said. The United Nations and aid agencies have halted operations in recent months after attacks on workers mainly in the south where the Taliban had their stronghold before the militia was ousted from power in December 2001 in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

The Taliban force is led by Mullah Dadullah, who is said to have been appointed military commander by fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Mohmmad Omar, AFP cited Laghmanai as saying.

The group operates from the mountainous Deh Chopin area of Zabul, Laghmanai told AFP. More than 50 Taliban were killed or wounded in fighting in the area at the weekend, he said.

Five U.S. Marines and two Afghans were wounded in yesterday's fighting, the military command said. Four gunmen were captured, two of whom were wounded, it said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai says the elections will go ahead as scheduled. The UN says violence is threatening the country's efforts to hold credible polls.
