Violence erupts again in Aceh
December 26, 2004 - 9:14AM

Troops killed 18 suspected separatist rebels in Indonesia's restive Aceh province, the army said, as violence continued despite the government's earlier claim that security had improved there.

The suspected guerillas were killed in separate clashes across the province on Friday, said army spokesman Ari Mulya Asnawi.

Troops seized 11 rifles and pistols, as well as ammunition, he added. He gave no more details.

Rebel spokesman Tjut Kafrawi said the dead were unarmed villagers who support the Acehnese independence struggle.

It was impossible to verify the army's or rebels' claims. The military limits journalists' movements in the province, and bars them from most rebel-held areas.

Guerrillas have been fighting since 1976 for an independent homeland in Aceh, where many of the 4.3 million people live in poverty despite the province's wealth of natural resources.

At least 13,000 people have been killed in the conflict. Both sides have been accused of committing human rights violations.

More than 2,300 alleged rebels have been killed since May 2003, when the latest offensive started after an internationally brokered truce broke down.

In May this year, the government downgraded a one-year state of martial law to a state of emergency in the province, claiming security had improved. However, the military still maintains a large presence and continues operations there.
