Ali Imron had admitted to helping build one of the three bombs used in the attack and driving a minivan which carried the largest one to the site. The bomb was set off by an accomplice. A panel of five judges said on Thursday that his role in planning the attack had been proven "convincingly and legally." Although other suspects have been sentenced to death on similar charges, prosecutors had asked for a 20-year sentence for Imron, citing his remorse and the testimony he gave against other defendants. However, the judges ignored prosecutors' demands and handed him a life sentence. Mr Imron, 33, is the youngest of three brothers charged in connection with the bombing, which has been blamed on the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah organisation. His brother Amrozi bin Nurhasyim was sentenced to death by firing squad last month. The eldest brother, Ali Ghufron, will face a verdict on October 2, a court announced on Thursday.
