Indonesian troops ordered to shoot on sight Aceh looters, arsonists
Indonesian troops were on Wednesday ordered to shoot on sight anyone involved in burning, looting or kidnapping in the province of Aceh as the military intensified its offensive against separatist guerrillas.
At least 13 people were reportedly killed on the third day of martial law in the troubled province in fighting between government forces and the rebels. Jakarta's offensive against the 27-year old rebellion by the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) follows the collapse of last-ditch talks in Tokyo to rescue a five-month ceasefire.
In Stockholm, the leader of separatist rebels squarely blamed Jakarta for breaking off the peace talks.
Mahmood Malik, whom GAM rebels consider their prime minister, called on the United Nations to immediately intervene in the conflict.
"We appeal to the United Nations for its immediate involvement in the resolution of the Aceh conflict and for an international fact-finding mission to be sent to Aceh to investigate the crimes against humanity that have been committed," a communique said.
Mr Mahmood also called on countries which supplied arms to Indonesia to prohibit their use in the province.
Indonesian troops foresee no quick victory in their largest offensive against the rebels in the oil- and gas-rich province. Some predict a 6-month military operation.
