Baghdad rocked by fresh explosions 18.45PM GMT, 22 Mar 2003 Night has fallen in Baghdad, and at least seven explosions have been heard following a succession air and missile raids on the fringes of the city throughout the day.
Iraqi forces are reported to have set oil-filled trenches ablaze around the city in an apparent bid to create a smokescreen to hinder the waves of air strikes.
Although the US-led coalition said the targets focus solely on Government buildings and bunkers, Iraqi authorities claim that three civilians have died and more than 250 have been injured since the start of bombing in Baghdad.
Health minister Umeed Midhat Mubarak said: "We are preparing for more deaths because the situation is developing rapidly."
Information minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf had earlier told reporters that 207 people were wounded in the fierce bombardment, making a total of 250 since raids started on Thursday.
The Americans have claimed the bombing has been pinpoint, using precise map coordinates, to try to prevent civilians being killed although US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld said it is inevitable that some "innocents" will die.
More than 3,000 missiles were fired by the coalition in last night's raids said Sir Michael Boyce, UK chief of the defence staff, including Tomahawks from British positions.
