Anti-war actors must not fear blacklisting: SAG Last Updated 2003-03-04 00:00:00.0
ArtsCanada LOS ANGELES, California - Entertainers who speak out against the pending Iraqi war must not fear Hollywood blacklisting, the Screen Actors Guild said.
"We deplore the idea that those in the public eye should suffer professionally for having the courage to give voice to their views," the union said in a message posted on its Web site.
"Even a hint of blacklist must never again be tolerated in this nation."
The message refers to the 1950's Hollywood blacklisting of actors suspected of being communists or communist sympathizers. Many in the industry were barred from work.
Actor Martin Sheen, a vocal opponent against the war, recently claimed top executives at NBC let him know they were uncomfortable with his positions.
Sheen, who plays a fictional president on the NBC show The West Wing, has also filmed anti-war ads.
The network has dismissed Sheen's allegations.
Actor Sean Penn has launched a lawsuit against a producer, claiming he was cut from a proposed film because of his anti-war stance.
"Some have recently suggested that well-known individuals who express "unacceptable" views should be punished by losing their right to work," SAG's Web site message states.
"This shocking development suggests that the lessons of history have, for some, fallen on deaf ears."
