Coalition Soldier Killed Near Najaf

A coalition soldier in Iraq has died from wounds suffered after insurgents attacked his military patrol near Najaf, south of Baghdad.

A senior military official, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, said Saturday that two gunmen were also killed in the incident on the eastern side of the Euphrates River late Friday. He did not say whether the slain coalition soldier was American.

Meanwhile, Iraqi guerrillas have released two more Japanese hostages. The journalist and peace activist were handed over to Japanese officials at a Baghdad mosque.

Several other foreigners are still missing or being held captive, including a U.S. soldier shown in guerrilla custody on a videotape released Friday.

In another development, a spokesman for radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al Sadr says talks with the United States aimed at ending an uprising by his followers are stalled. The French news agency quotes the spokesman as saying American troops are poised to attack Najaf, where the cleric is believed to be holed up.

U.S. coalition spokesman Dan Senor denies the claim that the talks are stalled, and says cleric al Sadr can prevent violence by turning himself in. He says the United States wants a peaceful resolution to the situation.

In Fallujah, local leaders and U.S. officials are meeting for their second day of direct discussions to end two weeks of violence in the town.

Mr. Senor repeated U.S. demands that foreign fighters and terrorists operating in the city must leave. He said the coalition is hopeful about a solution, but time is running out.

On Friday, U.S. military officials agreed to reposition their troops to allow residents access to the hospital.
