Baghdad Clashes Leave 40 Iraqis Dead, 202 Injured (Update1)
Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- At least 40 Iraqis were killed and 202 injured in clashes in Baghdad over the past 27 hours, the Health Ministry said by telephone from the Iraqi capital. One U.S. soldier was killed, Agence France-Presse reported.

Most of the casualties were in Sadr City, a district of Baghdad that's home to supporters of Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who led an insurgency in the city of Najaf last month. Thirty-three Iraqis died and 193 were injured in the Sadr City clashes between militants and U.S.-led forces, said an Iraqi Health Ministry spokesman, who declined to be identified.

Several U.S. soldiers were injured in the fighting with Shiite militants, the Associated Press reported, citing U.S. Army Captain Brian O'Malley. In a telephone interview from Baghdad, a spokesman for the military couldn't confirm any injuries or deaths of U.S. soldiers.

Hundreds of people have been killed in clashes between al- Sadr's militia, known as the Mahdi Army, and Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition forces in Sadr City, Najaf and other southern Iraqi towns since the beginning of August, according to the Iraqi government. Al-Sadr's supporters oppose the presence of foreign troops in Iraq.

The 19-year-old son of the governor of the northern Iraqi province of Niniveh was shot dead today in western Mosul by unknown attackers, AFP said, citing Hazem Gallawi, a media adviser for the provincial government. Governor Dureid Kashmula's predecessor was assassinated in July, AFP said.

Earlier today the governor of Baghdad, Ali al-Haidri, survived an apparent car bomb assassination attempt, AP said, citing an unidentified spokesman for the Interior Ministry.
