Sat, Mar 8 2003 5:27 AM AEDT Embassy advises Australians to leave Israel
The Australian embassy has written to all Australian citizens living in Israel advising them to leave the country unless they have compelling reasons to stay.
At the same time, families and dependants of Australian diplomats have been told to leave the country by early next week.
The message to Australian residents quotes an official bulletin from the Department of Foreign Affairs saying that in view of heightened tensions in Israel and the Middle East, Australians should defer non-essential travel and that Australians in Israel should leave.
It warns those in the West Bank and Gaza to leave while there is still an opportunity to do so.
It is a substantial upgrading of the warning and reflects not only the threat of Iraqi missile attacks on Israel but heightened concern about the rising level of violence between Israel and the Palestinians and Israeli plans to seal the occupied territories if there is a war in Iraq.
Bomb maker arrested
Israeli forces have arrested the Palestinian man accused of being the top bomb maker in the hardline group, Hamas.
Abdallah Jamal Barghuti, 31, has been accused of having prepared the bombs used in a string of attacks last year which killed around 50 Israelis and wounded hundreds.
He was arrested near the West Bank city of Ramallah after a year-long investigation.
Gaza Strip occupied
Israeli army units backed up by dozens of tanks and armoured cars have occupied part of the Northern Gaza Strip near the Jabalya refugee camp.
The army says it has no intention of withdrawing in the short term and its task is to stop Palestinian rocket attacks.
Unlike the bloody overnight incursions inside refugee camps and towns in the Gaza Strip in recent weeks which have claimed scores of lives this operation is different.
The Israeli's have set up camp on open ground near the towns of Beit Lahia and Beit Hanun and are using bulldozers to clear vegetation and building which have been used to launch home made Kassam rockets at the Israeli town of Sderot.
A military spokesman said the forces would remain on the ground for as long as needed to stop the rocket attacks.
