Bush told Saddam's sons may have been killed White House cautious in reaction From John King CNN Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON (CNN) --Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told President Bush Tuesday the U.S. military might have killed Saddam Hussein's two sons during a raid in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, administration officials said.
The initial White House reaction was cautious, though one official said confirmation the two sons, Qusay and Uday, were killed would "brighten" spirits in an administration that has been under sharp criticism recently from those who accuse the White House of exaggerating the threat posed by the former Iraqi regime.
"We can't say for certain but there is hope in my heart," said one administration official familiar with the operation.
This official said there was "very solid" intelligence that the two sons were in a home in Mosul at the time of the firefight, but said he was not at liberty to discuss the evidence that made officials optimistic that Hussein's sons had been killed.
"There is reason for that optimism but for now I am constrained in what I can say," the official said.
Raid in Mosul About 200 troops from the Army's 101st Airborne Division participated in the raid in Mosul after intelligence indicated that Qusay and Uday were in the area together.
A U.S. official said "a number of people" died in an intense firefight with U.S. troops, and American forces were trying to identify the bodies of four people killed in that raid.(Full story)
During a briefing with reporters, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said he could not confirm reports of the sons' death and referred questions on the matter to the Pentagon.
"I am not in position at this time to confirm anything," he said.
