Bush and Former Presidents Praise Clinton Thursday November 18, 2004 3:17pm
Little Rock (AP) - Former presidents Carter and Bush paid homage to Bill Clinton at the opening of his presidential library Thursday.
Along with the sitting president, George W. Bush (website/newsbio), they hailed the Clinton center as a gift to Arkansas and the nation.
They joined Clinton, his family and dignitaries from around the world at the dedication of the $165 million structure.
Thousands attended the outdoor ceremony and persevered through a steady, cold rain.
Carter praised Clinton as a leader whose own story inspired others to go beyond their limitations.
George Herbert Walker Bush, whom Clinton defeated in 1992, congratulated Clinton for building a "magnificent structure'' that tells a "uniquely American story.''
Both Bush and Carter spoke of a special tie that binds all those who have lived in the White House, a bond rooted in their devotion to their country.
President George W. Bush said the library portrayed a vivid era in American history. Bush told Clinton, "Mr. President, congratulations.''
