SARS deadly, but threat could be exaggerated, says UK scientist

London, April 26, IRNA -- The death rate from Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS) could be significantly higher than previously
predicted, but its threat has been exaggerated by the media, according
to the first in-depth research into the pneumonia-like virus.
The World Health Organization has estimated a death rate of 5 to
6 percent from infections looked at around the world, and suggested
that the virus could be defeated if countries worked together to stop
it spreading.
But new research carried out by Professor Roy Anderson at London
University's Imperial College calculated that between 8 per cent and
15 per cent of those who contracted Sars would be fatal.
His study based on around 1,400 cases in Hong Kong, which is to
be published in a medical journal next week, also found that Sars
remained infectious much longer than other viruses.
But the professor told the BBC that the threat of infection,
which has caused panic across the world, had been exaggerated by media
speculation.
"If this was a highly transmissible agent that was spreading like
wildfire then of course there would be huge cause for concern, but it
is not," he said.
Anderson said that SARS appeared to be contained, especially in
the development world.
"The concerns lie in the large populous regions of the world:
China, India, Indonesia, where the disease reporting systems are
limited," he said.
According to the latest WHO figures, SARS cases have been reported
in 26 countries, 23 of which are considered to have contained it well
with very few deaths.
