Five Killed in Montgomery County Shootings
From AP and news reports Thursday, October 3, 2002; 11:03 AM
Four fatal shootings in Montgomery County this morning have police now working to solve five fatalities that occurred over the last 15 hours in the county.
Police are looking for two individuals in a white Isuzu sport-utility vehicle with damage to its tailgate after several witnesses said they saw the vehicle leaving the scene of shootings.
About 7:41 a.m., a man was shot and killed as he rode a lawnmower in the 11000 block of Rockville Pike.
At 8:12, at the Mobil gas station on Aspen Hill Road at Connecticut Avenue, a man pumping gas was gunned down. A half-hour later at the post office of the Leisure World retirement community, a woman was shot in the head.
Another fatal shooting was reported at 10 a.m. at a Shell gas station on Knowles Avenue at Connecticut Avenue.
Montgomery County police said they do not know if the crimes are connected.
Police spokeswoman Nancy Demme says the first shooting took place last night. In that shooting, a 55-year-old man was killed in the parking lot of a grocery store in Wheaton.
As a result of the shootings, Montgomery County schools are under Code Blue, an emergency order that cancels all outdoor activities at the schools.
School officials are not allowing anyone to leave or enter the schools unless a parent calls ahead.
School spokeswoman Kate Harrison says the order will remain until police say it is safe.
