US Hands Over French Prisoners from Guantanamo VOA News 27 Jul 2004, 10:29 UTC French media reports say four French nationals detained at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba returned home Tuesday after being handed over to French authorities. A French foreign ministry statement said the four were handed over following discussions between U.S. and French officials. It said talks are continuing about three remaining French detainees at Guantanamo.
Officials said the four handed over today would be taken for questioning shortly after their arrival in France. They face possible criminal charges as part of an investigation by an anti-terrorism judge in Paris.
The men were captured in Afghanistan during U.S.-led operations against the Taleban regime and al Qaida terrorists.
