Human rights group: U-S causing needless deaths, torture in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan-AP -- A human rights group is blasting the United States, saying the military has caused needless deaths and tortured prisoners in Afghanistan.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch has issued a report questioning a wide range of U-S practices there.
But the U-S military rejects the criticism, saying the group is confused over peacetime tactics and what's necessary in times of strife.
Human Rights Watch points to U-S raids in which civilians, including more than a dozen children, were killed. And the organization says there are numerous reports of prisoners being beaten, shackled and deprived of sleep for long periods of time.
The organization says the problems make the U-S look hypocritical as it leads the fight against terrorism.
A military spokesman says its record in avoiding civilian casualties is "outstanding," and adds while the armed forces aren't perfect, they are trying to improve.
