METHODISTS SCORE CAPITALIST REGIME
Committee of East Conference Holds It 'Unethical' and 'Threat to World Peace'
PUBLIC OWNERSHIP URGED
Participation of Ministers in Politics Defended--Repeal Held 'Short-Sighted.'
Ministers and members of the Christian Church must face frankly "the fact that capitalism is un-Christian and unethical and then consider ways and means of replacing it with a system that is more in conformity with the principles of our religion," according to a report of the social services committee of the New York East Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
The report will be offered for adoption at today's session of the annual meeting o the conference, which began Thursday at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Hanson Place and St. Felix Street, Brooklyn.
Capitalism is denounced in the report as a constant threat to world peace. Under its system "unjust and unequal distribution," the great mass of people have not received sufficient income to enable them to patronize industry and commerce, according to the committee.
The committee recommended "that the ownership of our natural resources, such as coal, iron, oil and water-generated electricity and of our banking institutions, railroads, steel mills, cotton and woolen bills, &c. be transferred from private individuals and corporations to the people of the United States as a whole, who through their elected representatives of the workers with hand and brain shall control and operate them not for the benefit of a select few, as at present, but for the benefit of all the people, in their dual capacity as consumers and producers."
