I mentioned this to an Egyptian coworker who told me that in Egypt, the word afrangi or afranji is used to describe non-Egyptians–a term apparently going back to the Arabic designation of all Europeans as Franks. (I’ve also learned that a similar term is used in Thai to designate non-Thai people, and some suggest that this is a borrowed term. Maybe so, maybe not.)

Interestingly enough, I learned that a similar language emerged in North Africa from the 16th to the early 19th centuries, and in Egypt was known as Lisàn al Ifràng (language of the Europeans). This was later shortened to Ferenghi. Now…whether there is any relationship between the trader-merchant European “Ferenghi” of history and the merchant-trader species the “Ferengi” of Star Trek is anybody’s guess. But I’m willing to think that a well-read Trek author took the name from history.
