Chicago Asks Congress To Rethink Patriot Act Wednesday, October 01, 2003, 2:50 p.m.
(Chicago-AP) -- The Chicago City Council today passed a resolution asking Congress to reconsider parts of the U.S. Patriot Act that critics say violate Americans' constitutional rights.
The resolution is a compromise. The original called for the repeal of the federal law put in place after September eleventh, 2001, to help the government's war on terrorism.
Aldermen voted 37 to seven to pass the resolution.
Alderman Burton Natarus says he supports the resolution because Americans have to watch that the federal government does not abuse its power. He also doesn't want citizens to lose their individual freedoms.
But Alderman Brian Doherty voted against the resolution because he did not see any evidence of abuse of power. He called the resolution an "innocuous piece of rhetoric."
